Losing a tooth to an untreated cavity, treatment-based extraction, or dental avulsion can have multiple ramifications to your mouth. While you will certainly suffer the reduced ability to chew, the missing tooth can also affect your speech and mar your appearance. As time goes by, the structural void can cause the surrounding teeth to drift out of their healthy alignment. This can lead to dental fractures on the related teeth in your bite.

To effectively restore the tooth’s presence and function in your mouth, Dr. Robert Doyle might recommend installing a dental bridge. This is essentially a single piece of dental work that represents three teeth. It is a false tooth with crowns on each side that will eventually be cemented onto abutments that are formed from the neighboring teeth.

Dr. Robert Doyle will form the two abutments by using a drill to remove the tooth enamel from the two closest teeth. This leaves behind pillars of healthy dentin that surrounds the pulp and root of the teeth. Your dentist will then cast a detailed impression of the abutments and your personal bite pattern. This will be sent to our dental lab where your new bridge will be made.

A temporary crown will then be cemented over each abutment to protect them while the dental lab technician works to produce the new bridge.

A member of our Complete Dental Care staff will call you in for a brief second appointment when your bridge is ready. The temporary crowns will be removed and your new bridge will be cemented onto the abutments with a dental-grade adhesive.
