School is almost back in session, and your tween or teen is probably ready and waiting with new clothes, a new backpack, and various other back-to-school essentials. To help them maintain good attendance, be sure to help them have healthy teeth and gums. To help you help them, Dr. Robert Doyle and our team have some helpful tips to share with you today.

Encourage your tween or teen to clean their smile by not skipping daily oral hygiene. Provide them with a soft-bristled toothbrush, a fluoride toothpaste, dental floss they will actually use, and an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash to make sure they have what they need to brush, floss, and rinse their smiles daily. To ensure that these products are safe and effective, check to see if they have the American Dental Association Seal of Approval on them.

Next, you want to help their smile health by watching their diet. Provide them with plenty of water to stay hydrated and produce healthy levels of saliva for a healthy oral environment, set limits on snacking, and help them limit their sugar intake. To help with this, stock up on easily accessible fruit, vegetables, dairy and lean meat when they are hungry.

And finally, to complement their daily oral care, see that they visit their dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. Our dental team will deeply clean their smile and spot issues leading to tooth decay and gum disease early. If needed, we are happy to provide additional treatments such as fluoride treatment or dental sealants.
