No matter how beautiful the rest of your teeth may look, if you have one with a stain, or a chip, or that is unevenly spaced, chances are that is the only tooth you see when you look in the mirror. And it may feel like that is the only thing other people see when they look at you.

Dental veneers are designed to address this very problem. They are thin shells, often made of porcelain that are placed on the fronts of your teeth to conceal damage or stains, or to close the gap between your teeth. Your dentist will remove a small part of your tooth enamel and take an impression of your tooth. That impression will be sent to a dental lab which will make your veneer. You will receive a temporary veneer until your permanent one is ready. When the time comes, the dentist will place your new veneer on your tooth with dental cement.

If you take proper care of a veneer, it can last 10 to 15 years. But it will not last forever. At some point, your dentist will have to replace it. But until that time, how you care for you veneer can determine how long it can last. You can chip your veneers by chewing on tough or hard foods or objects. Chewing on ice and opening packages with your teeth can also damage them. If you grind or clench your teeth, talk to your dentist about a night guard. Your veneer can be stained by dark-colored food and beverages, and if that happens, your dentist will have to polish it for you.

If you have one or more teeth that could use and upgrade, talk with our dentist, Dr. Robert Doyle to find out if veneers will work for you.
