Cavity-free smiles require healthy diets and strong cleaning tools. If your diet consistently puts your teeth in harm’s way your cleaning habits may not be enough to keep them safe. In addition, if your tools are not up to the task required of them, bacteria and plaque buildup can remain.

Cavity prevention begins with correct oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. Typically, you should brush twice per day and floss at least once per day. Look for brushes that contain soft bristles and floss that is shred resistant. In addition, you can ask your dentist or look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on select products that have been listed as safe and effective.

Some foods are more harmful than others in terms of likely cavities. Highly sugary products and those substances that are chewy and sticky are some of the most harmful, as they can stick to your teeth and gums and continue to break down your enamel long after consumption. Change these unhealthy products with a diet that is high in vitamins and minerals for a healthy smile.
